Inspire Foundation
Mark Mentha
Director
Inspire uses the power of technology with the face-to-face involvement of young people to run three national programmes: Reach Out!, Beanbag and ActNow. Inspire also undertakes consultancies that promote the mental health and wellbeing of young people in Australia and overseas.

The Internet and its associated technologies provide unprecedented opportunities for the creation and delivery of new forms of social services for young people - the Internet is the medium of young people, it can be used anonymously and is available 24 hours a day.

Young people are actively involved in the development and delivery of all Inspire Foundation initiatives and in Inspire operations and development. Over 140 young people from around Australia currently work in partnership with Inspire as Youth Advisory Board members, Youth Ambassadors and Interns.

We work in partnership with corporates, individuals, trusts and foundations, community organisations and government who share our passion for inspiring young people.

Paddling for Refugees and Asylum Seekers
Sam Johnston
Committee Member
Our Organisation’s Aim
As a collective we aspire to shed light on the heart breaking reality that many refugees and asylum seekers are faced with on a daily basis in this country. We hope to encourage and support a desire to create change through sharing the realities and personal encounters of especially asylum seekers on Bridging Visas (E-type) and refugees on Temporary Protection Visa’s (TPVs).

People on Bridging Visas (E-type) came to Australia in search of safety from conflict and persecution. Although they are living lawfully in the community, they are denied the right to work, they have no access to Medicare, and no access to Centrelink or other government services. Already vulnerable and desperate, they are forced to beg from charities for their survival.

Such restrictions, together with prolonged uncertainty, negatively impacts self-esteem, mental health and make it hard to live a life with dignity. We believe there are in excess of 1,000 of these cases in Melbourne alone, and some have been on these visas for over 5 years.

The fight for life by such people is virtually an unknown struggle by the wider public. Lifting public awareness of those people on Bridging Visas (E-type) is essential to achieving change within Government polices that so greatly effect the lives of asylum seekers.

What More We Can Offer
We believe that one of the unique and powerful elements of "Paddling for Refugees and Asylum Seekers" is our ability, as a community collective, to provide a diverse and culturally rich fund-raising event. An event with a united purpose, sharing a wide spectrum of experiences whilst promoting a peaceful evolution towards more humane policies for refugees and asylum seekers. This unity is echoed through the involvement and support of local businesses and individuals providing assistance and support in all aspects of this event.

All funds raised go to support the programs of the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre (ASRC) and the Hotham Mission Asylum Seeker Project (ASP). These charities work predominantly with asylum seekers on Bridging Visas (E-Type) providing them with daily necessities such as food, clothes, accommodation, education, legal aid, medical supplies and treatment.

Mahé Drysdale
Mahé Drysdale is a three times world champion single sculler and created history by defending his title in the men’s single scull and set a new World Best Time of 6m35.40s.

Mahé represented New Zealand in the Olympic single sculls at the Beijing Olympics. During the regatta Mahé was struck down by a stomach virus and ended up on a drip as he attempted to recover between the semi-final and final. He lined up for the final looking gaunt and put everything he had into the race and with 300m to go was leading the field. However, in the final stages the effect of the illness took its toll allowing the reigning Olympic champion, Olaf Tufte, to sneak through. Mahé had to settle for bronze before being carried out of his boat completely exhausted.

Post the Olympics Mahé was voted New Zealand’s favourite athlete and his show of courage rowed him into the hearts of the New Zealand public.

Mahé joined KordaMentha during his university days and he worked for us for a number of years. He was then lucky enough to get an opportunity to row for New Zealand and left us to follow his dreams. We sponsored and supplied him with his first single scull and have naturally been involved with him ever since.

In the 2009 New Year Honours Mahé was awarded the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to rowing.

KordaMentha is proud to be Mahé’s principal sponsor through to the 2012 London Olympics.
