A major utilities provider in Queensland needed to strengthen its portfolio and capital investment planning to meet growing demand for water services.

With significant forecast capital expenditure on the horizon, the organisation sought a clear, structured way to prioritise and manage investments effectively.

How we helped

Our role

KordaMentha worked alongside the client to design and implement a new approach to capital planning. Collaborating across asset planning, program delivery and technology teams, we developed a staged, practical process that supports both portfolio-level decision making and the annual capital planning cycle.

Objectives

  • Establish a robust capital planning methodology based on leading portfolio and program management practices.
  • Create a prioritisation framework to ensure resources were allocated to the most strategically important initiatives.
  • Build internal capability for long-term, sustainable improvement.

Outcomes acheived

The new methodology gave the client clear processes and decision-making tools, enabling them to:

  • Identify and prioritise projects that aligned with strategic goals and compliance obligations.
  • Optimise the balance between asset risk, operational performance and growth.
  • Embed lessons learnt and support ongoing capability building across the organisation.

As a result, the client is now better equipped to plan, prioritise and deliver investments that meet both immediate needs and future growth, delivering outcomes that count.
