Overview How we helped Outcomes acheived

A NSW regional university, facing cumulative net deficits of around $200 million over the past five years, engaged KordaMentha to review its operating model and financial baseline. The aim was to develop a clear, actionable path back to financial sustainability.

As part of this engagement, we also carried out focused reviews of the People and Culture operating model and the internal complaints process, both identified as areas requiring immediate attention.

How we helped

Using our proprietary framework for university operating model design, we worked with senior stakeholders across the university to assess key strategic, value driver, and operating model aspects of the organisation.

Through a series of engagements, we developed detailed financial and workforce models and actionable recommendations focused on:

  • No-regrets initiatives.
  • Redesigning the operating model for efficiency.
  • Refreshing digital technology to support transformation.

We also reviewed, critically assessed and identified gaps across three key areas:

  • Functional model
  • Organisational structure
  • Accountabilities and decision rights

Outcomes acheived

Our final deliverable reports combined to produce a holistic, helpful picture of the issues faced by the university and chart a course back to profitability by identifying $41-57m per annum in savings by year three.

These reports have been well received by senior leadership and our team has been subsequently engaged to prosecute Phase 2 of the transformation program, undertaking a series of workshops to achieve executive alignment across the university and complete a detailed design of the new organisational structure.
