Monday, 26 November 2018 After 76 years, the Roger David menswear fashion stores around Australia will close their doors for the last time next Sunday (2 December). Administrator Craig Shepard of KordaMentha Restructuring announced today that all remaining new season stock has been marked down to 70% off to clear this week. Roger David has 500 full-time, part-time and casual staff in 57 stores and other facilities in all states. There are 193 employees in 19 stores in Victoria, 98 in 15 stores in Queensland, 77 in 12 stores in NSW, 60 in seven stores in Western Australia, 15 in two stores in South Australia, 15 in two stores in Tasmania and 4 in one store in Canberra. Mr Shepard urged shoppers to help clear the last of the stock. “It can be a triple-win in the next six days – people can get a great bargain, a Christmas gift and help provide the cash to pay employees their entitlements,” he said. Mr Shepard said the Roger David employees had shown tremendous loyalty in recent weeks by working hard to sell stock. "Unfortunately, we could not find a buyer despite some interest in such a well-known and powerful brand." Roger David was hit by many of the trends that were hurting the retail sector – global competition, online players and rising fixed costs, he said. The company once had more than 100 stores and had been closing outlets in recent years to try to find the right size for the business. But the forces working against it were too strong. Roger David stores opened in 1942 and quickly established itself as an Australian brand synonymous with men’s suits. In 1946, Roger David dressed the Australian cricket team, that included Don Bradman, Lindsay Hassett, and Keith Miller when the side resumed international competition after World War Two.
