The appointment came two days after the company went into a trading halt.
Mr Mentha said the company had been hurt by falling iron ore prices this year at a critical time in the company's development.
Western Desert Resources operates the Roper Bar project in the gulf country of the Northern Territory.
The company was listed in 2007 and began exporting to China last December.
Mr Mentha said the voluntary administrators would hold the first meeting of creditors within eight business days.
